Using Artificial Intelligence to Design Assignments and Teach Critical Thinking

Using Artificial Intelligence to Design Assignments and Teach Critical Thinking In-Person / Online

This workshop with Dr. Michael Barnwell explores practical strategies for redesigning assignments so that students can learn how to develop their critical thinking skills WHILE using LLMs to complete the assignments. Participants will learn how to structure tasks that require students to analyze, question, and refine AI outputs rather than simply copy them. We’ll cover concrete techniques, from documenting prompts to verifying evidence, comparing AI drafts, and designing reflection activities that demonstrate genuine student reasoning. Faculty will leave with ready-to-use assignment templates and rubrics that align with their discipline while embracing the realities.
